It is a flight from responsibility (to others, to God): a particular manifestation of a lack of love, selfishness,...being disconnected!
Sloth might be quite active, therefore, riddled with frivolous curiosities.
It is the vice opposed, by defect, to the virtue of studiousness (i.e. the enthusiastic pursuit one thing in all it's parts, which, when the thing is a person, it is called love; if the Person is God, it is charity).
Study the Lord and He will carry you.
