Saint John Henry Newman, Doctor of the Church

Last Sunday, September 28, 2025, just before the Angelus, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV announced that on November 1, 2025 he would proclaim Saint John Henry Newman a Doctor of the Church.

"I have the joy of announcing that on the next first of November, in the context of the Jubilee of the World of Education, I will confer the title of 'Doctor of the Church' to Saint John Henry Newman, who contributed in a decisive way to the renewal of theology and to the understanding of Christian doctrine in its development."

Pope Leo's Personal Secretary: Fr. Edgard Rimaycuna

Edgard Iván Rimaycuna Inga (born September 24, 1989 in Chiclayo)[1] is a Peruvian priest, philosopher, and theologian. Since May 8, 2025, he has served as private secretary to Pope Leo XIV.[2]

Biography

Originally from Chiclayo, a city on the northwest coast of Peru and the episcopal seat of Robert Francis Prevost before his creation as cardinal and subsequent election as Supreme Pontiff, Rimaycuna Inga began his education at the Juan Pablo Vizcardo y Guzmán National School, and his secondary school in San José de Chiclayo, from which he graduated in 2005. He later entered the Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo Major Seminary. After his initial formation, he served as a pastor at the Santa María Catedral Church in Chiclayo until 2017, when he moved to Rome to continue his studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute.[3][4]

According to some accounts, Prevost, as a cardinal, requested his presence in the Vatican a few months later. This interpretation is supported by a message posted on social media in October 2023, in which Rimaycuna Inga bid farewell to the Chiclayo community with words that allude to a future collaboration in Rome:[5]

"Along with the nostalgia of leaving this beautiful place, there is the joy and consolation that a friend awaits me there in Rome with whom I will continue to work for the good of the Church."[6]

Prior to his current role, he lived for a year in Manesseno, a town in the Liguria region, where he established ties with the local inhabitants. He currently serves at the Holy See in collaboration with Leo XIV, a link that became evident during a visit to Genazzano.[7][8]

(Letter of Saint Thomas Aquinas to Brother John on How to Study)

Since you have asked me, my dearest John in Christ, how you ought to study in order to acquire the treasure of knowledge, I give you this counsel: that you choose to enter by the streams, and not immediately into the sea, because you must go by the easier things to the more difficult.

This, then, is my warning and your instruction.

• I command you to be slow to speak, and slow to go to the room where people chat; embrace purity of conscience.

• Do not stop making time for prayer; frequently love the cell (your room) if you want to be introduced to the wine cellar.

• Be friendly to everyone; do not seek to meddle in the affairs of others; do not be too familiar with anyone, because too much familiarity breeds contempt and provides material for withdrawal from study.

• Do not in any way meddle in words and deeds with the worldly.

• Above all, avoid wandering about. Do not fail to imitate the footsteps of the saints and good men.

• Do not look to the one from whom you hear, but whatever good is said, commit to memory.

• What you read and hear, make sure you understand; clarify your doubts; and set out to store whatever you can in the closet of the mind, as if you were desiring to fill a vessel.

• Do not seek things that are too high for you.

Following these steps, you will bring forth and produce useful branches and fruits in the vineyard of the Lord of Armies, as long as you have life. If you follow these things, you will be able to achieve what you desire.
